Hobo
The newest addition to the Realm Family is Hobo. At the end of August 2005, he was discovered resting (or perhaps hiding from the neighborhood fur kids) under a visitor's car. When I went out to investigate, he came out from under the car and started rubbing on my legs and giving out the softest mews.
I started stroking him and in spite of all the beggar lice (those sticky, Velcro-like plant seeds that catch on critter fur) in his bushy tail, he seemed to be in pretty good condition - except that I could feel absolutely every bone in that boy's little body! Muttering that I was about to make a big mistake, I headed for the house with the purrbie in my arms - right past the curious fur kids. Once cleared of the fur kids, Hobo wanted DOWN! Seems he enjoys loving, but only for a short time and only on HIS terms! LOL
I left him on the porch, went inside and opened a can of cat food. He gobbled it up, then went through his bathing routine before "making himself at home" on the porch. :D

After his rest, he vanished! *Sigh* Okay, I guess he decided he only needed a meal and got back "on the road again".
About a week later, there he is - at the door mewing and still skinny as ever! I feed him again and take a brush to his tail (which has a wee bend at the very end of it), which he accepts grudgingly. And he's gone again... hmmm... methinks The Realm has become his "truck stop"!
Three days later he comes in from the south and takes up his perch on the porch. He's learned that the fur kids get fed at 4:00 PM and he wanted to be sure he arrived at "Meal Time"! LOL
This time, though, he didn't hit the road... he found a perch on the grill and made that his bed (of sorts). The next morning he discovered (by peeking through the kitchen window) that the purrbies get fed in the morning! Oh Wow! TWO meals a day?! How lucky can a purrbie get?! The boy definitely loves to eat! He gobbles up his food, attacks the other purrbie's food, then checks out the fur kid food, too! He'll do his best to snatch food from your plate and right out of your hand if you're not quick enough! We're hoping that as he learns that food is available 24/7, he won't be so aggressive ... that's the plan anyway - reality has a way of getting in the way of the best laid plans! LOL
The rest is pretty much history. Larry decided that "Hobo" fit him purrfectly and Hobo's accepted the name ... more or less! Which means he answers when he thinks you might have food, but if someone else has food, calling his name falls on deaf ears. *grin*

About a week ago (two weeks before Halloween 2005), we decided that indoors is where this little guy belongs. All The Realm critters are indoor creatures - keeps them safe, out of trouble, and gives me peace of mind. And, with Hobo being a black purrbie and Halloween just around the corner... well, inside is just MUCH better! He's taken to being indoors rather well for a semi-feral critter. Buffy and Billie are still curious about him, but whenever they get close, he hisses his displeasure and they back off. He's gotten a couple of swipes at their noses and I believe that eye-watering experience has taught the fur kids that this boy has weapons (unlike the girl purrbies with clawless front paws).
The purrbies in residence are not especially thrilled at the newcomer! But then, they have never liked newbies coming into their territory! There's a lot of hissing and growling - all from the girls mind you! Hobo just looks at them like they're outta their minds and carries on with whatever he was doing. They seem to think he's some sort of threat and treat him accordingly. Hopefully this attitude will wear off after he's been here a while - and after he's had "the surgery".
Hobo's such a friendly purrbie! He loves being around people and being stroked (when he's in the mood, that is!). He's also amazingly playful! Of course, that's not so great when you're trying to love on him and he snatches at your fingers with his claws and teeth!

- - - - Well, now it's December 2005 and about the only thing that's changed with Hobo is his size! <giggle> He's gotten bigger and filled out a little - at least every bone in his body can't be felt! He's still pretty intense when it comes to food! Seems there's *never* enough for him! Head for the kitchen and the foot/paw race with Hobo is underway. The girl purrbies *still* hate him and he still looks at them like they're nuts!
He's just about THE coolest purrbie ever! His attitude is SO laid back and casual. He definitely does not take life seriously at all! LOL
Now that the weather has cooled down considerably, Hobo's not quite as interested in beating us to the door. Oh, he still makes attempts and when he fails, he'll sit at the door and wait - he knows we have to come back in *sometime*! LOL Once in a while he succeeds, but he certainly has the "Cat and Mouse Game" down to a science. He will run a few paces away from the door and stop, looking back to see if one of us is following. Then as we get just within reaching for him distance, he does a slow trot a few more paces away and the game is afoot! He takes us all the way up the driveway before he finally stops and pretends he's looking at something mysterious and far away so we can scoop him up and bring him back inside.

Hobo really enjoys "computing"! Especially when one of us is playing :D
Here he's "helping" Larry play Zuma. He was content to just watch the balls rolling and the cursor moving around for a while.
Then he just couldn't help himself, he *had* to chase that thing down!

~ 22 December 2005 ~
I cannot believe what a cool purrbie this little dude has turned out to be! It's been over a decade since there was a male purrbie at Thisildo Realm and I'd forgotten just how neat little guys are! ;o) He's a lover extraordinaire and a determined lover at that! It doesn't matter what you're doing, when he wants to be loved on, that's what's gonna happen and I doubt that high water would even phase him! LOL
He still challenges us with the "getting outside" game. And when he does manage to squirt out the door, he is a streak of black racing up the drive! Then he just stops and waits for one of us to walk up to him, pick him up, and carry him back to the house. It's amazing! I know we can't count on him *always* stopping at the top of the drive, so we make sure we get out there and get him before he gets the idea that we are willing to let him run loose.
His food issues are still with us, though not nearly as intense as they were in the beginning. Oh yeah, he still gobbles up his food, then hits the girls' plate, and tries to steal from the fur kids (haha - that's not gonna happen in this lifetime!), but he's not nearly as frantic as he was. At least now, he waits until the purrbies have nearly finished before he bulldozes his way in! <grin>
He's getting bigger, too! (well, duh!) It's kind of bizarre but you can almost *see* him growing! He's gonna be a Big Boy when he's full grown, for sure! He's serious about a clean litter box and will let us know when he's not happy with the condition of it! ;o)
