So... you don't believe your imagination can run wild? Hmmm... try adding a dark night, barking dogs, and a new sound to your world and see what your imagination can do! ;o)
It was just about midnight in early June. I was just shutting down the computer for the night when I heard someone yell. That's not such an unusual event around here, so I didn't think anything of it. A few minutes later, I hear the yell again, only now it's a series of screams. Not a high-pitched scream. Actually, the first thought that ran through my mind was an elderly woman - a lot like the sound the woman made in that old Twilight Zone episode where she was invaded by aliens (who turned out to be us). (I did warn you about "imagination"!)
The screams set my heart to racing and I ran to the phone and called 911. There's a woman screaming in the woods! She sounds like she's terribly frightened!
My dogs are whimpering and barking to be let out, but there's no way I can let them out! So, I sit on the floor with them and love on them while we listen to the screams coming through the open windows.
After nearly 45 minutes I call 911 again - She's still out there! "We sent a car out there," the dispatcher claims, "but they couldn't hear anything. If they come to your house, will they be able to hear it?" Yikes! I'm surprised they can't hear this in town! Yes! Send them to my house! Ten minutes later the woods along the side of my house are lit up with high-beam flashlights and deputies trekking through the woods trying to locate the screams that they've finally heard.
The screaming stops and the deputies have not located the source... This does not bode well. The deputies finally give up the search around two in the morning. About an hour later, I can still hear the yells from the woods. They aren't as frantic anymore, but they are still there. My mind goes on a whirlwind journey of all possible scenarios before I drift into a restless sleep.
The next morning I'm torn between wanting to go into the woods to see what the yelling was about and terrified of what I might find when I get there. Finally, I get up my nerve and head for the woods with the dogs. I follow the trail through the property and along the stream, stopping for a moment to admire the new setup the neighbor has done with his goats. They now have long cable runs set up and they're far enough apart that they don't get tangled up.
I'm looking right at the Billy Goat when he opens his mouth and out comes the sound of the woman screaming in the woods at midnight.
